02.03. – Synthomer looks into the sustainable future of the coatings industry
Sustainable, renewable and bio-based materials have been subject to regular discussion over the last decade, with the profile increasing recently due to ever-tightening health & environmental regulations and also concerns over material scarcity.

Synthomer, as one of the world’s leading speciality polymers manufacturers, carried out research projects to evaluate bio-based monomers for dispersion polymerisation. Findings on using 2-Octyl Acrylate (2-OA), a by-product of the processing of castor oil in alkyd manufacture, as a substitute for n-Butyl Acrylate (BA) were published in the European Coatings Journal, issue 3/2017 (www.european-coatings.com).

The investment adds several new and fully automated production lines for Acrylic-Dispersions. The plant extension strengthens the company’s continuous growth in Paints & Coatings, Construction Chemicals, technical Textiles as well as Adhesives and Sealants.

The production plant in Worms is Synthomer largest acrylic site in Europe, being strategically well located with close proximity to the customer base and excellent connections to the river Rhine, railway and road.

The investment will add 30,000 tonnes to its existing capacity. The high flexibility of the newly constructed lines enables further organic growth in the specialty segments, since more than 25% of the new capacity will be utilized by innovative, highly environmentally friendly products.

The expansion will allow shorter supply lead times and meet highest production and quality standards. This investment further strengthens Synthomers pan-European dispersion plant network across the United Kingdom, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Italy and Spain.

The project is expected to complete by third quarter 2018.
03.02. – Meet the Experts at ECS 2017
With its continuous efforts in research and development, Synthomer is returning to this year’s European Coatings Show with 4 technical presentations introducing new products for the coatings, construction & adhesives industries:
[>>]
1. Vinyl Acetate Copolymer dispersions meeting the latest requirements for WB Thin Film Intumescent Coatings (by Dr. Francois Simal)
Intumescent Coatings used in the construction of multi-storey buildings are able to retard heat propagation to steel (through the formation of an expanded protective char layer) and hence forestall the loss of strength that would cause the building to collapse. The demand for higher performing WB products capable of replacing solvent systems is driving the need for new developments. This presentation will describe a new generation of binders meeting the latest market demands for protection time as well as regulatory and environmental requirements.

2. 1K Hydrophobic Binder for Spray Coated Anti-corrosion Primers and DTM Topcoats (by Thomas Bernhofer)
Metal corrosion is economically very damaging, costing several billion USD every year. To maintain the aesthetic aspect and value of expensive assets Synthomer offers a dedicated product range for long lasting metal protection. Furthermore these waterborne binders are environmentally friendly, low in VOC and free of hazardous components such as APEO and formaldehyde. At the ECS Synthomer will be demonstrating this high performing product range as well as highlighting new developments.

3. High Performance Re-dispersible Powders for Construction Industry (by Dr. Charles Bobichon)
With its recent acquisition of the Hexion Performance Adhesives & Coatings business, Synthomer now also offer a broad range of Re-dispersible Powders based on different chemistries for the construction industry. At the ECS Synthomer will be highlighting Axilat PSB 150, a Styrene-Butadiene based Re-dispersible Powder that provides very high bonding strength, fast re-dispersibility and unique hydrolysis resistance. Axilat PSB 150 is recommended for gypsum, ceramic tile adhesives and other applications.

4. State of the Art Waterborne PSAs for Clear Filmic Labeling and Graphics (by Olga Bernatova)
During recent years Synthomer has focused on developing specialty polymers for highly demanding PSA applications such as clear filmic labeling and graphic foils. Our novel technology combines polymerization techniques and the use of functional surfactants and monomers to allow the formulation of PSAs with well-balanced adhesion-cohesion properties, excellent water-whitening resistance and very high adhesion retention when exposed to moisture.

Be sure to attend these technical presentations and visit our booth (Hall 7, booth 344) to speak with our experts to understand the full range of technical solutions we offer.
30.01. – Technical Presentation at ECS Conference 2017
The Coatings industry faces many challenges to meet new regulations regarding Volatile Organic Compound content (VOC) addressing the need for product compliance whilst also delivering equivalent performance properties. [>>]
Industries are continually searching for new coating systems that contain less organic solvents and a variety of approaches may be used to achieve this.
In the upcoming European Coatings Show Conference 2017, Synthomer will be presenting two technical papers demonstrating its continuous efforts in providing the solutions to lower VOC for the coatings industry.

Session 4.6 The Route towards Ultra-Low Polymer Dispersions by Odair Araujo will discuss where VOCs come from in polymer dispersion, the approaches used to remove VOC and a glimpse into what else can be done to further reduce VOC.

Session 19.5 Next Generation Liquid Polybutadiene Polymer in Solvent Based Coatings Applications by Anne-Sophie Hesry on the other hand will discuss how the incorporation of the next generation liquid butadiene polymer in a solvent based coatings system can reduce the total solvent content as well as improve certain paint performances.

Don’t forget to visit our booth at the ECS 2017 (Hall 7, Stand 344) from 4th – 6th April and speak with one of our experts in regards to our broad product offerings and the latest technical solutions we offer.
